This polar bear mother and her 3-month old cubs have only just left their den in Wapusk Park, northern Manitoba, Canada. Driven by the need to replenish her body, mom is leading the cubs in an overland trek to find seals on frozen Hudson Bay, more than 50km away. The Churchill population of polar bears has been in a steady decline in recent years as climate change has warmed the area, causing sea ice to form later each year, and break up sooner each year in the spring. With less ice comes less seals, and therefor less food for hungry bears. If global warming continues unchecked the future for this population of polar bears looks pretty grim indeed.
