Artist's Description

Why do they do it? Why do these smaller (5 foot wingspan) cousins of manta rays choose to hurl their bodies out of the water and into the air, often landing with a resounding splash? To demonstrate physical fitness for mating? To signal a position to others? To confuse predators or to stun prey? No one really knows, but what I know is the joy of capturing one mid-air with a camera! I took literally hundreds of these images as these rays were popping out of the sea all around me in the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez), Mexico, and very few were good enough to keep. I hope you enjoy these comical little acrobats as much as I do!
