Artist's Description

Just one of the murals to be seen in Sheffield.
Sheffield is situated approximatly half way between Devonport and Cradle Mountain in Northern Tasmania. The area began after land lots were auctioned by the government in 1859. The first building was erected by James Powlett who named it the Kentish Inn. It was used for all the populations needs from local drinking spot to Post Office. Later he changed the name to Sheffield Inn after the area in England he came from.
The area grew and was named Sheffield as well, probably by Edward Curr who was the Tasmanian Manager for the Van Dieman’s land Company.
The first comunity building was erected in 1867 and is the oldest building still standing in Sheffield. Located in the main street it served as a meeting hall during the week and a church building on Sundays.
Sheffield is known as ‘The Town of Murals’ since the inception of the Mural Project in 1985. This has been credited for bringing back life to the town and providing much needed tourist income for the area.
