My days
Misspent beneath the overpass
Where graves of abandoned shopping carts
Dance with cattails along the mercury streams
Tires build bridges for the urban children
Over psychedelic slicks
Hot weeds hide me from suspect
I blend and sweat and yearn for the same
Breath of life as my botanical brothers
Neon packages with scenes of middle class gaiety
And exploits
Fall like autumn leaves
Down from the overpass
Will these be ruins?
As ancient as Egypt?
Without kings or pharoahs or
Queens who drank from Sun Rah and bathed in pleasence
I imagine myself
Blessed in a simple kingdom
I overlook this industry
My contemporary tragedy
Beneath the overpass

when i read this, i think of identity. my interpretation is that when we don’t know who we are, we are tossed and turned (evident with “bathed in pleasence”.. the worlds unending commercials of self and instant gratification.. wants and unrequited needs). what i love about this piece is the line “blessed in a simple kingdom”.. personally i relate this to faith and having to think like a child.. pure and innocent.. without question..
“neon packages”.. does this refer to mediocrity?
powerful, descriptive and a piece that can chew you right at the core!
