Real Life

Have you ever been cleaning out a fish bowl or tank over the kitchen sink and accidentally lost one down the side with the garbage disposal ?
You stand for a minute of dumb founded belief thinking there is no way this just happened. The one time you didn’t put the strainer down"just in case," and it happens. And rather fast. Now what?

Life offers no training for this emergency that you are now facing. There is no one you can find in the yellow pages that can help you.
There are shows on how to survive in the wilderness with a twig, a shoe lace and a pair of finger nail clippers, but nothing to handle the real life situations. This is now solely your problem, you are alone on this and the clock is ticking. You must think and move fast!

You jam your hand deep down inside of the drain up to your elbow trying to fish him out. After several failed attempts your body fills with panic and guilt. You start run water to keep him alive while you rack your brain on what near by utensils you could use? A spoon ? A fork? A small spatula? The salad tongs might fit in there? Then you look at the switch to the disposal and secretly you think…“Just a flick of the switch and it could ALL be over with?” But you don’t. You run the water, calm yourself down, push your hand back down in there and pray like you have never prayed before that this time you will be able to scope him back up.

Your sweating, your looking over your shoulder praying that this will stay between you and the fish laying in the bottom of the disposal.
No Luck! The kids come in and see the fear in your eye’s, your face is white and you look more crazed then they have ever seen you before. Then the question you were praying that they wouldn’t ask you, “What are you doing Mom?” Your secret is out, there is no turning back your face is written with guilt and panic. Your hand is franticly searching the drain touching lightly while trying to determine the exact location of this fish who‘s name you can‘t even remember.

You feel something about Beta size, something cold, wet and slimy as you run your fingers around the bottom of the drain. You get excited! You ever so gently scope it up while your heart is pumping. “Slowly, slowly, you think, almost there.” You smile, you relax and then you open up your clutched hand and look. No luck, just a green bean from last night.

Now every one now must take turns peering down the drain to see the almost lifeless body in the vast tunnel of darkness, or the porthole to hell depending on which end your body lays on. This now becomes a family function. A time to bond with each other while gathered around the kitchen sink devising plan after plan to save the fish. The very same fish no one will remember to feed. The same fish that swims in a filthy bowl for weeks on end, now has everyone’s full concern.

You must become a hero within the next few minutes and devise a masterful plan to save this $3.49 life that now rest in the bottom of the sink gasping for water. You eye the switch again. The kids see this and gasp, “MOM!” Ok not the best choice to make right now. You must not fail your children and become the cause of years of therapy later on in life for them.
You take in a deep breath and try one more time jamming your hand in there. The light of heaven shines now down on you and the voices of angels singing with glee fills you. You have saved him!

There is cheering and laughter coming from those around you. You smile and relax as you return him back to his rightful home. You feel proud of yourself! You wipe the sweat from your brow and you vow to this little $3.49 fish that you will never neglect him again for so long. You promise, cross your heart that you will always use the strainer from this day forward.

Now forgive me, but I’m off to clean out Gecko that has been just as neglected. What is the worst that could happen? ‘Now where did I leave the vacuum?
