Will You?

There was a box sitting on his bed, and he didn’t get it. There was no one in the apartment. There hadn’t been anyone in the apartment all day. He should know, because he had been there all day, with no shirt and baggy pajama bottoms, watching the latest going ons of his favorite soap couples. Which made it all the more peculiar that a small cardboard box was lying on his coffee table where a patch of empty space had been a moment ago. But, then again, he had been asleep. Or had he? He looked at the TV screen but it was no help; the episode could have been the one he was watching five seconds ago or five years ago.

What the hell? He opened it carefully, half expecting a snake or mongoose or something equally cool-sounding to pop out but was further confused by the diamond ring that languished at the bottom. He picked it up and held it to his face.

“Honey, I’m home!” His girlfriend must have been moving at the speed of sound, because when he looked up she had her arms around his neck and he heard the door close. “Oh my God, is that an engagement ring? Oh, honey, I do!”

His eyes followed the postal service logo sewed on her shirt to the the one stamped in the bottom corner of the box, hidden away.

“Nice try,” he laughed, tossing the ring back in.

Will You?
