The Search

God curved up towards my eyes

A suggestion from the Earth

And travelled weightless,

Six feet above, one foot behind

Soft as baby chicks,

Nested in clouds

He came in the assertion

Of a young longleaf pine

Honoring its ancestors

Like a frozen Shinto priest

He was an ill-turned leg,

Dutifully bearing the weight

Of a life with angles forever changed

He was in the terrestrial glaze

Of a primal, Greuby pot

That put Everglades in my nose,

The taste of sea-green colored ruins

In my mouth

He was in the joy of my brothers

Silent on the ocean at dawn

Seeking peace on the tips

Of white waves

Feeling their evolution

Concious of the fragile coral reef

He was in the joining of races

Equality proven

In the perfection of

A tiny, brown hand

He was in a lecture hall

Where homo sapien sapien

Came to mean

Wise, wise man

Who strengthens the future

Of medicine

He was in the graceful movements

Of a dying man,

Hands plucking wordlessly,

Taking what is needed

In the abscense of air

And He was at the bend of my knees

Supporting my search

For freedom

And a faith that could not come

Because, like him, it was

Already there
