The Merry-Go-Round

It’s the most beautiful merry-go-round I’ve ever seen!
Plaited gold with a splash of yellow, red and green.
The tinkling music floated lightley through the air.
It was the Pied Piper singing ‘no boundries or care!’

I watched you slowley get off our train in a trance,
Lights flashed, people laughed, you walked with no backward glance.
I called “Come back, it looks like fun but something’s not right!”
You turned, laughed “Dont worry, I’m happy, life’s not black and white!”

You looked so young and sweet as you joined the party within.
“Welcome, ‘Little One’!” purred the conductor with a grin.
I watched and waited till you disappeared from sight.
Then I saw him – a haunting figure in the fading light!

His naked form was wasted and pale – He shook where he lay.
“How old are you” I asked. He smirked “19 today.”
Shaken I asked, “Who did this? From where have you come?”
“The merry-go-round,” he wheezed. “All I wanted was some fun!”

“I’m one of the lucky!” He pointed to things on the ground,
Then I realised there were skulls and bones all around.
In horror I searched their faces – they looked so happy and clean!
Then it dawned on me what was wrong with the errie scene.

With every rotation, each passenger lost something!
T-shirt on him, boots on her, there a diamond ring.
Some were naked! But with so much fun who would notice?
I screamed your name, my eyes blurred – I couldn’t focus!

I calmed myself when a pretty lady caught my eye,
“But she looks fine! Nothing’s missing on her. Tell me why?!”
“Some give things you cant see.” The dying man shook his head.
“I’d nothing left – they took my shadow then left me for dead!”

“She got on……….But she can leave when she wants – she just wont forget.
Live with the fact – ‘the choices’ made, make the reaping you get!”
“Come with me”, I offered. “Be clothed, eat some and rest,
Those on this train have a future. They live life the best.”

That once poor broken Man, who had no where to go,
Now sits with me – his eyes shine and his face has a glow!
Each stop he’s the first off, to help the wretched here and there.
The Ones who are striped, – Spat out, by the ride that goes no where!

Says he’s keeping your seat warm. Doesn’t know why you’ld leave!
That you’re gone for good, he says he just wont believe.
I dont know where you’ve gone my child, or what you’re up to.
But know – at every stop I get off, I’m searching for you!
