Standing guard over its lean summertime meal of one unfortunate seal, this polar bear awaits the coming of the ice, a time of plenty for the bear.
This was a very lucky encounter to have with a polar bear. Spotting the bear from a zodiac watercraft, our group was able to watch the bear safely from a very close distance as it consumed what was left of its seal meal. Most of the polar bear I saw in the area around Baffin Island were very skittish, apparently because the bear are hunted by native people in this area.
