Artist's Description

Anticipation rose. After a short trek a sunrise elephant-back ride through grasses as tall as an elephant’s eye led me to a mother white rhino and her baby resting in golden sunlight in Kaziranga National Park, Assam, India. Located on the banks of India’s mighty Brahmaputra River in the northeastern state of Assam, Kaziranga boasts a healthy rhino population, wild elephant groups, deer and tigers. Birds are plentiful, with many rare species migrating through the park or making it their permanent home.

The white rhino is listed as endangered with loss of habitat and poaching causing the most threat to their survival.

Photographed in dawn light.

Canon 40D, Canon 100-400mm lens, shutter 1/500, f/9.0, exposure bias -0.33, focal length 135mm, ISO 400
