Artist's Description

Ewer Village, Asmat region of West Papua, Indonesia.

Fierce painted Asmat warrior whoops, brandishing spears, bows and arrows during a welcoming canoe ceremony. Shortly afterward I was shown into the Men’s House for more thunderous, foot-stomping welcoming dances. It had to be at least 100-degrees or more in that sweltering longhouse. The coup de grace was an interesting adoption ceremony whereby I was accepted into a local family as a daughter. The ceremony involved smearing lime all over my limbs and caresses from my new mother but fortunately did not go any further than that, as Asmat adoptions often take more intimate turns!

Canon 10D, Canon 100-400mm lens, shutter 1/250, f/ 8.0, focal length 400mm, ISO 100.

March 16, 2007.
