Artist's Description

Village of Sanglia Dol, Tanimbar Island (formerly known as the Spice Islands but now called the Maluku Islands group), Indonesia.

A Sanglia Dol village elder revealed his one remaining tooth when breaking into a big smile.

The village is reached by climbing a 108-stone staircase leading to a plateau high above the landing beach. In Sanglia Dol’s epicenter is an ancient stone altar where sacrifices were performed in the past to cement alliances or precede events of warfare.

The entire village plus island and neighboring islands turned out for our visit, with everyone fully decked out in their best woven finery. Dancers ranging in age from the very young to stately elders entertained us while in the village. It was akin to stepping back in time with warriors brandishing fearsome spears while traditionally clad villagers welcomed us to their village.

Canon 10D, Canon 100-400mm lens, shutter 1/125, f/5.6, focal length 310, ISO 100.

March 19, 2007.
