Instinct

Is it your instinct or just sheer curiosity that you are drawn to open a box that is sitting on a table? You notice it and suddenly you are filled with an overwhelming desire to see what is inside!

It could be a box that you have not seen before or one that you find on your annual clean out of cupboards…or perhaps it is stored for safe keeping. Whatever the case, you ‘stumble’ across it and instinctively, before you know it – the lid is off. Emotions take hold as you inspect the contents; you are drawn to certain colours and textures and slowly sift through each item.

Just like the Bowerbird, we humans collect objects – from beautiful shells to flowers and feathers, from rocks to coins or pieces of glass. We spend time arranging these collections and displaying them to ‘show off’ to others. We collect them in boxes and bowl and arrange them on shelves.

These collections have meanings and memories.
They tell a story.
They make us laugh, they make us cry.
They take us back to our younger years.
They paint a picture.

And as the years go by and these items grow more precious, you continue to gather and collect and add to these items – after all….it is your instinct to do so.
