Artist's Description

Ice plant, Carpobrotus, Algarve, Portugal –
Carpobrotus, commonly known as pigface, ice plant, sour fig, and Hottentot fig, is a genus of ground-creeping plants with succulent leaves and large daisy-like flowers. The name refers to the edible fruits. It comes from the Ancient Greek karpos “fruit” and brotos “edible”. An invasive coastal plant from South Africa.
I’m not sure whether this is C. edulis or C. chilensis (sea fig) or indeed a hybrid between the two species. Photographed near Sagres / Cabo Sao Vicente in April 2018.
