On a Dark Night

A free translation / adaptation of ‘En una noche oscura’ by the Spanish mystic St John of the Cross.

1.
Upon a moonless night, | aflame with desire, | I left my house.
I left it by a secret stair – I left it silent as the grave.

2.
The darkness wrapped me round, | so warm, so secure. | None saw me pass.
I had no lamp, I had no guide – | save for this burning in my heart.

3.
The darkness drew me on | Far brighter than day | Into the place
where he who knew me stood alone| where he who knew me stood concealed.

Chorus 1
Night more lovely than the day; | Night that brought me to my love
Night that joined me to my heart.

4. beneath the armoured wall | I gave in to love. | He pierced my side.
I held him soft against my chest – | The night wind fanned the cedar trees.

Middle 8: love transformed me into love, transformed me into love :| (repeat to end), over which:

You touched me with your hand | I caressed your hair | all my cares and grief dissolved | among the lilies there.

Chorus 1
Night more lovely than the day; | Night that brought me to my love
Night that joined me to my heart.

1. En una noche oscura,
con ansias, en amores inflamada,
¡oh dichosa ventura!,
salí sin ser notada,
estando ya mi casa sosegada;
