Animal.

He was a loner, a drifter, and a wanderer from place to place. He lived off the land and off the kindness of strangers. He hunted. He did what he had to do to survive. He spent long days in the forest and long rainy nights under bridges. He was dirty and he smelled. He was the king of his domain and the domain was a living hell.

His sores dug into his body, like a pitchfork into soft earth. All manner of parasites lived in his well-worn clothes. On his body they sucked bits from him for sustenance. He had learned to disregard these creatures, just as he had disregarded his name years ago. His mind was focussed on survival, much as any animal left to go wild.

Today was his day. The day he wandered toward the lights that normally he avoided. He had needs as any creature and tonight his needs had to be fulfilled. The roads were not a safe place, too many see animals on the side of the road. He walked in the ditches and in the grass, always out of sight. He would travel as close as he had to find one. All of this was instinct.

Tonight luck was on the side of the hunter. A vehicle pulled off to the side of the long stretch of dark highway. He knew someone was close, probably relieving himself or herself. He moved with a strange quickness. He lowered to the ground like an animal. It was close, he could smell it. There it was a man slightly larger than he was. He didn’t wait for an invitation. He hit him from behind and held on to the man’s head as it hit the ground. The poor man was unconscious as the hunter rolled off the prey.

He ripped off the man’s clothing, revealing the soft flesh. His hunger was overwhelming. His mouth opened wide with rotting sharp teeth. They dug deep into his prey. The steaming warmth of red liquid covering his face and gushing into his mouth and throat. He stopped briefly to look at the man’s face.

He sniffed, close to the face, closer, catching the scent of something he needed, “Brains,” he whispered opening his mouth wide again.
