Artist's Description

I have begun to read a poet…a man of Portuguese birth, Eugenio Andrade. The most revered and honored poet in that beautiful land, he has received more awards than any other poet of that country.

Spanish critic Angel Crespo once said of his voice that he was, “born to baptize the world.”

His poems are birthed in the country side of his youth, rural Portugal, and Greek lyric.

For me, both admiring the man for his love of language, and his symbolic craftmanship of verse, I am gladly a student and learn….

You can learn a language, visit a country, speak fluidly with its citizens….to be one…..to be a “countryman”, you must absorb it. You must look at your own naked skin, then cover it with the soil of that land. You must scar your knuckles with its stones, crawl in the garden of its intellectuals, and love its people. You must drink from their cup.

Reading Andrade, I feel the loam of Portugal in my nails. One, very small step.
