Artist's Description

The Cistercian Order originally forbade the building of towers but by the beginning of the 16th century, this rule appears to have been relaxed enough for Abbot Huby to order the construction of the great tower at Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire. Marmaduke Huby was abbot at Fountains from 1495 to 1526 and the tower he constructed still bears his name.
