The Heart In My Head

He told me it wasn’t love.
He told me it was endorphins – dopamine and norepinephrine.
Maybe a little oxytocin.

A chemical cocktail released from sex.

A high.
An addictive substance.
It wasn’t love.
The same stuff comes with pain.

I told him I knew about pain.

He told me he knew about love.
He’d written a thesis on it and the chemicals that made it.
It wasn’t a feeling,
it was a formula.
Compounds that made our synapses fire.

He told me all he knew about love.
It’s in your mind, he said.
Not in your heart.

I showed him what I knew about pain.

When he was on the floor, I asked him,

If pain is like love,
if it’s in your mind,
why are you holding your balls?

I hope they hurt as much as the heart in my head.
