SILENT DEATH

He drifts through the grass unseen
With not a care in the world
Even as he slithers past the grazing sheep
His presence is still unobserved,
At his own leisurely pace
He reaches the first step of his destination

The suns rays reflect brightly from the water
Showing any pass buyer that the creek
Is crystal clear and full of fresh reviving goodness,
The small frogs leap from lily to lily
Or just bask half buried on the edge
Of that slow running ancient creek

Then the ripples show
The water has been parted
Frogs quickly disappear
As our mysterious friend
Fishtails his way to the bank on the other side

A bicoloured reptile that can bring fear
To any living animal, including man
Settles into a coil
And starts basking in the sun
The snake is in no hurry
For his day has just begun!
