Artist's Description

B17 Series

511 Sqdn

Based at RAF Polebrook from April 1943 until the end of WW2 in 1945 the B17s of 511 Sqdn saw constant combat action in a variety of roles. Continually at the forefront of bomber operations 511 Sqdn was part of the 351st Bomb Group which suffered heavily in European missions with some 170 B17s and crews lost from the four squadrons comprising the Group.

The image shows a pair of B17s from 511 making their way homeward in somewhat relaxed formation – the aircraft are still in the heavy camouflage finish prevalent up until mid 1944. The aircraft in the image was indeed a ‘member’ of 511 Squadron and flew six missions to Germany at the end of WW2.
