Artist's Description

Polikarpov I16

Designed in 1934, and regarded as revolutionary at the time, the I16 was extensively deployed with the Russian Air Forces in 1941. Hardly a match for the sleeker Luftwaffe Bf 109 the I16 squadrons suffered a 50 % loss in the first two weeks of Operation Barbarossa. However, the Russian pilots undertook a massive holding operation in much the same way as the Battle of Britain aircrews and with some degree of success.

Seen here a pair of I16s drop onto a lone Ju88 for a rare combat success.
