P51 Mustangs – Red Tails
‘Bringing them Home’
The 15th Air Force served throughout WW2 in the North African and Italian campaigns. The famous Red Tails, the Tuskegee Airmen, did a sterling job in covering and escorting the B17 and B24 units serving with the 15th. Credited with the highest successful recovery rate for any fighter group escorting stricken bombers back to safety the Red Tails proved superlative in this particular task. They provided an escort service even as far as Berlin in the latter days of WW2
Seen here a couple of Red Tails oversee a damaged 2nd Bomb Group B17 struggling to return to the base at Amendola, Italy.
