During hors d’oerves, the open house guests were startled, hearing an enormous rumble. Beneath McBride’s Veterinary, the earth heaved. A gigantic rift widened swallowing the building and parking lot; an aftershock, then stillness.

The author, finding the story boring and characters disagreeable, had decided to kill them off, wasting a perfectly good buffet.
