the emergency brake

I’ve never had to use it before.
I wonder if it’s the same thing as when a fire breaks out.
Would I run for the canister and know how to spray?
I rarely gave it thought.

I’m sorry.
It was an unforeseen accident.
The road may have seemed familiar, but the curves felt tighter.
I heard screeching. I smelled metal.
My peripheral vision blurred
and in a split second, I couldn’t hear, think or see clearly.
Dust took over and something instinctual
kicked in.

The brake.

Just for that pass.

I knew I couldn’t look at the tracks.
The lines caused a mess.
The pavement would need to be cleaned
and that road is now closed for repairs.

They say there’s no accidents.
I’m already seeing the lessons that this path
can teach.
