Dementia

It’s a horse that finally gets through to them
makes them nod & laugh;
acknowledge me
The echoes of a voice screaming “help me”
still piquant from weeks before
fading, finally

I draw them great big flowers
we admire the colours
the Polish lady’s intrigued
stares at my pastels
so I offer her one
but she says “I don’t smoke”
her standard line
I keep going

I know another wants one,
but doesn’t dare touch
says they’re a ‘good deal’
but won’t use them
not in front of the others
thinks they’re like drugs
little wax keys
that unlock bad memories
