Kayley & I

It had always been us two.
Kayley and I.
Me and Kayley.
That’s how I remember it.
That was the way it was.
Since year five.

I looked up to you Kayley.
You were smart back then.
Pretty.
Perfect.
You had your ears pierced.
I wanted mine done so badly.
Mum said no.

In year six,
I missed you like hell.
I was worried that you’d ditch me
When I finally reached high school.
And I had boobs.
I wondered if I’d be pretty.
Like you.

I needn’t have worried.
We were besties.
Always had been,
Always would be.
That was the way it was.

Do you remember…
When I was in year seven.
And I liked Ben.
And you teased me.
Coz Ben was like a brother to you.
And I blushed like crazy when he looked at me.

When you were fifteen,
You lost your virginity…
To that druggo guy,
You had been with for a year or so.
What was his name?
It doesn’t even matter anymore.
I barely remember yours.

It had always been us two.
Kayley and I.
Me and Kayley.
I pretend I don’t I remember it.
Coz in year nine
Boyfriends and broken hearts
Mean so much more
Than promises.

This poem is about childhood
friendships… and the way we
learn from them… even though
they don’t last forever.
