Artist's Description

This is a general store which according to the current owner operated in White Town, Montgomery County, Arkansas, USA from about 1925 until the late 1960’s. This sparcely popuated little village was founded in 1922 by Ike White. The acre of land on which this store / home now stands, was received as payment for a new window iinstalled in the home of the Morrison Barnard home. Ike quickly built a garage on the property along with a well which still stands today. The following year he built this general store.

Whitetown once had a general store, a dance hall where the boys from Mauldin Lumber Company would congregate on Saturday nights, a sawmill, a gristmill, a gasoline station and a dozen or so small homes. Prior to 1930 Whitetown Hwy 6 ran all the way from Mt. Ida, AR to Ft. Smith, AR. As hghway improvements were made, Hwy 270 became the new modern road totally bypassing the small town.

Cordella Smallwood later lived here with her family until the 1970’s when she moved to Pencil Bluff. The new owner used to live here, and had moved away, and now how moved back and purchsed the property. It is now being used for storage and memories. Whitetown is now a small communitiy of residences. The town has completely vanished other than this old general store.

Whitetown is still on the map and has the zip code: 71961
