It is not often one sees a traditional funeral cotege outside of London. This one was in Swanage a couple of years ago now. It was the funeral of a well loved and respected lady in our town. As the cotege passed through the town a silence that one does not hear very often occured, it was like stepping back to an age before the motor car.
I have attempted to convey this by making the image look as if it were an old postcard. The difficulty was removing all the traces of modern day life, like double yellow lines on the road, street furniture, television ariels and satelite dishes. The castle in the background is really there, it is Purbeck House, built in the late 19th century by George Burt, it resembles a Scottish baronial castle, completely out of place in our little sea side town. It was a convent for many years, but now is a hotel.
