The Virgin Mary & Child – detail of the east window at Tyneham Church Dorset.

This is a detail of a wonderful piece of stained glass at Tyneham Church. The window is in memory of one Grace Draper, 1874 – 1923. Her husband Warwick Draper was a solicitor from London who had built a second home at Tyneham with the permission of the landowner Nathaniel Bond. The window itself is the work of Martin Travers, who is regarded as one of the best church fittings and stained glass artists of the early 20th century. He is known for his catholic-baroque style.
I think this is one of the most beautiful windows I have seen, the Virgin’s face is wonderfully painted in a Modigliani style with those fabulous almond shaped eyes. Every time I see it I am completely captivated by it.
