Ray’s Candy Store is run by Ray, a true East Village legend and icon. He was born in 1933 and moved to New York in 1964. He worked for a decade as a dishwasher in New York until he was able to purchase the candy store for $30,000 in 1974.
The store has survived the many changes that have occurred in New York City over the last three decades. However, times have been hard lately.
It’s not an understatement to say that Ray is one of the kindest deli owners in New York City. He has a heart of gold and there is such a sense of community whenever you step inside his store. He is always ready with a big smile and an ‘I love you’. I can only hope that his store will remain where it is because it’s truly an iconic part of New York City; a true slice of something that is slipping away.
