Artist's Description

This painting was born from a hospital stay while I was pregnant with my second child. I had developed Diabetes and Hypertension and I was kept in the hospital for two weeks. During that stay, I noticed artwork on a wall in my room. When a Nurse started taking it down, I asked her not to as it brightened the gloom of my room. She them explained the Art Therapy program to me and said the patient in the room before me had made it. I was thrilled to learn of the Art Therapy program and couldn’t wait to learn more about it. When the Art Therapist came to my room, with a delicicious tray of mediums, she suggested that I make a tree. Well the tree I made that day was very black and foreboding at first but then the colors came through and my tree was done. She explained to me that the black represented my depression, fear for my child’s safe birth, my lonliness and saddness. She made note of my strong root system, my trunk firmly planted in the ground. She said the colorful leaves and light represented my hope, and happiness in awaiting my second child. She helped me see how the tree represented “ME”. Therefore…Tree of Me. This one was created at a much better time in my life. As is with many of my pieces, the color was added first, then I took permanent pen and brought the tree forth. I am still amazed each time I create a piece this way.
