In mid-summer the yellow flowers of Lady’s Bedstraw, (Botanical name: “Galium verum”) are abundant in the pastures of the Aran Islands.
As the name suggests it was formerly used as a pleasantly smelling filling material for bedding. It was also thought to deter creepie-crawlies of various sorts.
It has had other uses in the home such as curdling milk for cheese-making and medicinal uses such as stopping bleeding.
This bedstraw was photographed near Dun Eochla Stone Fort
