This sky-in stereographic panorama was shot at Lisfannon Beach, Fahan, County Donegal. It was shot on the first sunny Sunday of Spring.

Five years ago, the spot where the tripod stood would have been in the middle of the sand hills. They used to extend to about the high tide line where the line of black seaweed runs along the beach.

Storms and high tides over recent years have eroded the sand hills.

The panorama was shot on Sunday 22nd March – the first sunny Sunday of Spring. The cars in the car park have mostly come from Derry. This is the nearest beach to Derry city. So it is the first choice for day trippers, who have had their Sunday lunch and now want a walk on the beach. They too have had an erosive effect on the sand hills both directly by walking across them and indirectly by driving here in internal combustion engine cars adding to greenhouse gases and accelerating global climate change.

The tide is a long way out. At the right of the panorama we get a glimpse of the mouth of Lough Swilly where it opens to the North Atlantic. To the right of that (on the Eastern coast of Lough Swilly) are the Urris hills. At the bottom, across Lough Swilly (on its Western shore) Is Knockalla Mountain. To the left we look South West towards Inch Island. At the top of the panorama is the main road from Derry to Buncrana, beyond it is Gollan Hill.

It was shot for the World Wide Panorama Project’s “Weather” event in March 2015. I will add a link to the Virtual Reality version when it becomes available in a few days time (probably 2nd April 2015).

Method and Technical Photographic Details

This high dynamic range ( HDR ) panorama was created by combining 27 separate digital photographs. The source images for this panorama were shot in Raw mode on a Canon EOS 5d Mk ii with a 15mm Canon Full Frame Fisheye

The 27 separate images were shot in groups of bracketed (1/250 : 1/100 : 1/40 all at f16) exposures at 60° intervals. They were all stitched and blended together using Hugin an open source panorama tool. Hugin in turn invoked Enblend to smooth the seams and Enfuse to create the High Dynamic Range effect.
