This ruined cottage is at Cashelnagor, in West Donegal, Ireland.

Cashelnagor – in Irish “Caiseal na gCorr” – literally means “Stone Fort of the Cranes” (or Herons). Cashelnagor is a townland in the Donegal Gaeltacht – the Irish speaking part of Ireland’s rugged, windswept northwestern county.

The 1911 census lists hundreds of households in Cashelnagor. Now there are a scattering of houses, most of them empty. There are many ruins.

The Derry to Dungloe railway line ran right past the yard around the house. The house was built of the same flat quarried stone as was used to build the walls and embankments around the railway line.

So I guess that the house was built sometime after the great famines of the 1840s, and after 1850 when the railway line was opened. Perhaps the first occupant had something to do with the railway. The last train ran past here in 1952.

Notice how the house has three chimneys. However if you look through the front door you can see that there is no hearth beneath the “chimney” on the right gable of the house. It was just included to give it a sense of symmetry (and perhaps to impress the neighbours :-).

If you look carefully at the front stonework near the middle chimney, you can see straight vertical lines that suggest that at first the house ended there and the left hand room with its second hearth and chimney was added at a later date. I imagine that the people who lived here built an extension as their family grew.
