County Donegal, Ireland

  1. This photograph was taken at twilight from Inch Level. The water in the foreground is Lough Swilly behind Inch Island. In the furthest distance are the Derryveagh mountains in West Donegal. I THINK the three we can see are (from left to right): Errigal, Aghla Beg and Aghla More. Silhouetted in front of the mountains is the O’Doherty Castle on Inch Island.

This photograph was taken at twilight from one of the hides in the bird reserve at Inch Level. This hide is at Tooban Junction where the railway lines from Derry to Carndonagh and Derry to Dungloe Parted company. The lines were built in the 1850s and the last train ran through here 62 years ago in 1952.

It has become one of my favourite places for an evening walk. There is a looping path of 8k that goes across a pedestrian causeway, to Inch Island and then along the Inch shoreline, over the traffic causeway and back to the bird sanctuary car park along an old railway embankment which once carried the line out of Tooban Junction towards Letterkenny and Dungloe. It is lovely in the evening as the birds are coming in to roost
