Translation - Excerpt from Tomorrow we’re in Pamplona by Jan van Mersbergen

Chapter 1

A boxer runs through the city. He runs along a street lined on both sides by tall houses. He shoots out from between parked cars, runs diagonally across an intersection, down a bicycle path, over a bridge, along the tram tracks and around a bend —and every passerby assumes that he is training. But he is running faster than usual, his breathing is uncontrolled and his eyes wide.
Without making a sound his high, laced shoes fly over the paving-stones and in his head resound fragments of sentences, accompanied by a bell. Single words resonate hollowly between his eardrums; buzzing noises, deformed and far away. And then suddenly clear.
—Stop.
He jabs.
—Stop it!
He jabs once again, and again he hears a bell, louder and clearer than the first. —Stop, someone screams. He feels a hand on his shoulder and shakes it off with his elbow. He places a hook with his left —catches the man square in his face —turns again to his opponent.
—Stop it, he hears. But he punches again, and again and again.
He crosses a broad busy street and runs on into a park. He comes to a small field with a bronze statue in the centre —a woman holding a child in the air as if to entrust the child to the clouds.
He checks himself and panting, looks at the statue then goes and sits on a bench. The trees and bushes stand motionless between him and the street with the tram tracks. Dark grey clouds slide behind the trees. There are no birds, not even pigeons.
