Step Two

Step one
Open your eyes
Let out a noise
A gasp
Let the air fill your lungs
Like it did when you were
A child.
Hear the sounds
Echoed from high walls
Rushing like the sea
But without the ocean’s soul.
Remember your childhood
Feel something again
Or numb yourself
Rinse and repeat
You’re getting good at that
Innocence was underrated
Why were we not told
How big the world is
And how dark
And cold
It can
Be?
I wonder how long
It takes
To come to terms with
What you are
If you can’t beat them
Join them
Join the navy
Join the air force
Join the infantry
Join the war
All’s fair, right?
Play the games
Fuck the rules
Write your own ones
More crafty than anything
That has ever come
Before.
Become the enemy
Fight fire with fire
No, fight it with magma
Burn it up
Destroy its life force
Crush its soul into the dust
And scorch the dust.
Innocence is overrated
Become the demon
And destroy
Everything.
Ignorance then?
Was that a part of innocence?
The thing that I have fought
For so many years?
Maybe this quest
For knowledge and strength
Maybe it is wrong
Maybe it is flawed
Maybe this is why we fall so hard
Break so well
Shatter so fast
Rebuild
Calluses on the heart
Let them protect
Let them crack
Let them bleed
Let them harden
Let them defend
A soft heart is a weak heart
I am not weak.
Not any more.
Ignorance is bliss
Cherish it.
For once it has been lost
It can never be found.
My fish is dead.
Less than a week.
I loved it.
Fed it well.
Cleaned the tank
Just like I should
But still
It is dead.
Death comes to us all
Sometimes sooner
Rather than late
Face mortality and cry a little
Close your eyes
Hide the tears
But feel again
And realise
No matter how many walls
Or calluses
Or bars you put
Around your heart
It is still soft on the inside
And no matter how far you numb yourself
You can still feel
And no matter how lost innocence seems
You are still so young
And ignorant
And free.
Don’t be in a hurry
To grow up.
For step one is birth.
Step two is death.
