Birthday Party

The birthing process
Begins with conception
Or contraception failed
Takes quite some time
Quite some tears
A passion for eating
Morning sickness, afternoon sickness
Perpetual sickness
Love starts to stretch
Fall apart
Something we thought could last
Torn to pieces
Thrown to the wind
Yet we wait, bound to this life
Which we have so proudly
Naively created
A foot
Melts my heart
I can feel again
Its feeble attempts
To speak
Months to go
I whisper to it in the night
Telling stories from the beyond
Warning it against all manner of villainy
Guiding its footsteps
Teasing through relationships
Arguing from time to time
But always coming back to an overwhelming
Love.
Not long now
The sickness continues
but blood pressure rises
Complications
Beep Beep Beep
I touch your hand
and tell you it will be alright
Beep Beep
Though I have no right to promise
I promise anyway
As any parent would
Beep
Fading, while out here the doctors run
And scramble, and fight, and try so so hard
And I realise you were always too good for this world
Beeeep…
And as I see your face, still and peaceful
I shed only a tear
For the child who never suffered.
