Artist's Description

This is a painting of the Sandia Mountains at sunset. The word Sandia in Spanish actually means watermelon and sometimes when I have visitors from Spanish-speaking countries they get quite a giggle out of that name.

But I suppose that the mountains didn’t look just like a watermelon to the Spanish and perhaps the fact that they had marched in armor on horseback and on foot across several deserts made them think of something nice and juicy like a watermelon. I live here in this hot dry climate and I can tell you that thirst probably had a lot to do with the name!!

Many people in New Mexico really enjoy the sunsets and they are quite a vibrant and bright pink every evening as the sun goes down and lights up the minerals in the mountainside.
