where are the swallows?

winter winds have gathered up the scene
and dumped it around, in places
it does not belong.
all is asunder.

half the night spent
with one ear in sleep
and with one ear to the ground,

as hunkered animals
miss home,
find themselves adrift,
restless seasons shift
and render the fat from the night sky.

it will make us strong
if we can feed again
on the light it gives.

could hardly see the unfolding
earth,
the window blotted out,
a river running through it.

the darkness was all,
smothered, it held itself
like a cushion on my face,

and as i turned to find sleep
i thought of the desert
and wondered where the swallows are.

where are the swallows?
