half held

not one sound rose
above the heartbeat in my ears,
except for the rain,
flat and cold on my cheeks,
on the hood,
rattling through me.

it has seemed so dark for a while,
as if like moles,
we have crept on, out in the half-light
scratching out a living,
restlessly moving like
a magnet to the pole.

these flat winter months,
level out the flesh and the fire,
they make grey those once blue eyes,
there is no mercy.

i feel only half held,
barely enclosed in those arms,
unsteady and yet
free from harm.

half held
