harbinger

you laid out such crisp shadow,
etched lines over fences,
across hedges,
silhouettes of straying birds,
danced on the wing,
and cast shadows down.

even the still room was refreshed,
by the light bouncing off the moon,
the moon which has no light
of its own.

worried but not troubled,
i stand beguiled,
the sky flattened out in its own dark,
he smiles,joyous harbinger,
of the time to come.

and night causes sleep soundly, yet i hear
things cry through the walls,
that break open into dreaming.

we lead our lives a merry dance
in the quiet hours, spun
out across the fields and shore,
we can be ghosts, and memories,
the greatest stories told.

so moon, don’t let me die
here in your embrace this night,
nor stretch me on the rack of light,
from here until soft and yielding dawn,

let me revel in your arms,
let we give way, let me live and go on.
