secret spring

the air was thick,
heady bluebell scent rose up
laid out the path ahead
in its own carpet, endless
perennial,
such sweetness cloys my senses.

and the chirruping erupts
all around, those tiny bones,
and tiny wings,
grace the perfectly empty sky
over my head, beyond the sight of my eyes.

i am as one again,
with my feet, and the point they meet the ground
again,
i see the oilseed rape blooming,
acres yawn,
so we keep to the un-kept edges.

wheeling buzzards
distract me, point me upwards
floating out of sight
out of reach,
as the first waves of memories
break over me.

if i reach out i can feel sand,
and hear the sea,
miles away from this point, and me.

if i close my eyes
i can hear what i know i will miss
when you move forever away from me.

if i stop laughing,
i will feel i have given up everything,
so i smile, and give thanks,
and share with you my secret spring.
