on your own

one day the swallows will return,
coming home,
footsteps will tread,
gently over bluebell and crocus,

one day soon, the tight night will
be broken by the dawn chorus.

in the wetlands, cattle will steady,
calves will rest,
rest their great heads,
watching dragonflies
hover over the emerging reed beds.

cuckoo will alight, if they arrive,
throw out the baby
and stay alive,

the morning will resound with
their triumph.

and one day the frogspawn
will have gone,
some will die, and some live on,

then i will again turn my eyes
to the ground
recognise your face in mine,

struggle with the thoughts
that i have let you go,

’i’m so sorry you’ve had to do this on your own’

on your own
