The Assiniboine Park Zoo is now home to two new White Bison calves, both born in the spring of 2009. The birth of a White Buffalo (and not an albino, which is usualy blind and dies at an early age) is a rare event. It occurs as a result of a recessive mutation that leaves the hair follicules without the dark pigment millanin. Due to its remarkable appearance and rarity over the centuries, a White Buffalo became a powerful spirit, in First Nation’s Plains cultures of the (Dakota, Lakota and others) The Buffalo was the foundation of the way of life to the Native People of North America.
