Artist's Description

Traditionally, New Mexican houses are earth colors, a seemingly infinite palette of browns, beiges, whites, sands. Frequently, the doors and window frames of the houses are painted blue to ward off evil spirits/prevent evil spirits from entering the home. The origin of this custom is unclear (although there has been speculation that it stems from the indigo blue robes worn by the Franciscan friars) and the shade of blue varies wildly: lapis, turquoise, teal, cornflower blue, sky blue, royal blue.
