Hailing from the northern highlands of Guinea and southern Guinea-Bissau, the Baga ethnic group produces some of the most talented sculptors in the area whose work includes figurines, masks and other objects, including the Baga Bird shown here. The bird is used tribally to call on “fertility gods” to bless an unfertile tribal woman. A ceremony is held where children are adorned with Nimba masks, of the Baga Bird type and drum beating and hand clapping are included.of
The Baga ethnic group occupies northern Guinea and south of Guinea-Bissau with a population of approximately 65 thousand. Baga carve several types of masks, sculptures, birds and other objects. Best know of all these objects are the Nimba mask, also known as the Baga mask. It is usually large and adorned with raffia fiber, sot that the face and body of the wearer is disguised. Women of the Simo secret society who want to have children invoke these masks as the “Mother of Fertility”, using it at the first-fruit rituals.
