The Scars He Bore (Viet Nam Tragedy)

I sat on the porch
He said may I
He sat down
I started to cry

He just came back
From lands unknown
No explanation
He just came home

He never wrote me
Not even a word
He brought me
A big toy bird

He was my cousin
Who I loved so
But now I was unhappy
And he had to know

Johnny, why did you leave
I am a soldier in a war
I never told you because
of the things I saw

Soldiers were hurt
Died on the battlefield
Trying to protect
Our little world

I put my arms around his neck
And laid my head on his chest
Don’t ever go back to that place
I love you..you are the best

He had been in Viet Nam
The horrors and death he saw
He would never mention
When he came home from that War

I find it hard to talk of that day
That war did so much harm
My cousin suffered
The after-effects of Viet Nam

The nightmares he had were so real
He suffered true emotional trauma
He cried and was always depressed
He went through such a horrific drama

He was so brave
I don’t believe in war
I am a pacifist
Because of The Scars He Bore

Artist's Description

Viet Nam was a tragedy not only for Johnny, but for so many who came back
with emotional as well as physical scars that never healed…they never spoke
of what happened there …. it was too overwhelming and emotional…there was
no easing their pain or their nightmares….it was a hell that they lived in for the
rest of their lives….
