Angie & Mini-Me (Fiction)

Sonia waited by the door for her daughter, Angie, to return…she had been
missing for over a year..the police had told Sonia her daughter was “presumed
dead”. What would she say to this young woman when she came in the door.
She was last seen getting in a blue pick-up truck with a man driving…no one
ever saw her after that. She was only 13 years old.

Angie came home with two policemen escorting her. She had been found on
the street in Pennsylvania..and was returned to New York. Apparently she was
found unconscious..brought to the hospital and released into police custody
to be returned to her mother. Sonia was shaking as she opened the door..
she looked at Angie..but this was not the child that left..it was a different person..
Her eyes were circled..her hair bleached blonde and it looked as though
her soul had been torn from her. Sonia put her arms around Angie and
she was so thin that Sonia became upset. Angie pulled away from her.

When the police left, Sonia called the hospital for an update and she was
informed that Angie was HIV positive. Sonia was devastated. What had
happened to her child.

For the next several weeks Angie would not leave her room, barely spoke to
her mother and would not look into her father Jack’s face.

Sonia attempted to speak to her but she would not discuss what happened to
her on the day she left or during the time she was away from home. Sonia
insisted that she see the doctor and after much aggravation she finally went..
but insisted it must be a woman doctor. The news was not good..Angie had
a full-blown case of AIDS. She was given medication and sent home with
monthly visits to update medications.

Her spirit was broken..she did not speak..she ate very little and would not talk
about what happened.

Sonia decided to go to the local Animal Shelter to get a cat because she saw
a mouse in the house. She asked Angie to go with her..Angie refused..after
being cojoled she agreed. Sonia told her I won’t be able to handle a cat and
drive.

When they got to the Animal Shelter, there were so many cats and kittens looking
for a home, but one caught Angie’s eye..it was a little black and white cat..sitting
all alone in the corner of a cage..she was very thin and sad. She told Sonia that
was the cat they should take..Sonia thought the cat did not look well at all but
asked the caretaker who told her that the cat had AIDS and was being put down
the next morning. Angie began to cry and Sonia told the caretaker she would
take the cat..bring her to the Vet and get the proper medications for her.

As they walked out of the shelter Angie held the cat very close to her heart..their
hearts almost beating as one. Sonia took the cat directly to the Vet who examined
the cat, took blood tests and gave her a steroid medication.

The cat went straight into Angie’s room and she named her “Mini-Me”..Slowly,
Angie started to talk to her mother, first about mundane matters, then about
her affection and connection with Mini-Me.

Soon Angie told her mom about her experience during the past year. She said
she was hitchhiking because she was late for dinner and didn’t want her father
to be angry as he usually was when she came in late. The man seemed nice
enough until she asked him where he was going..she lived in the other direction.
He slapped her and told her to shut up or he would kill her. He then drove to
Pennsylvania, got a motel room, raped her, sodomized her and beat her. She
felt that her life was over. She now became damaged goods. Although so young
she knew the score and what people would think. He kept her almost a virtual
prisoner for about a year. One day he picked up and just left her on the street.
When the police found her, she hadn’t eaten in about a week and was weak,
dirty and exhausted and she knew she was very sick.

Angie continues to take her medication, continues to give “Mini-Me” his medicine…
her relationship with her father is still not good..but she has a good relationship
with her mother. They have moved to Florida so she can have more sunlight
and she and Mini-Me are doing well.

Had Angie continued in her depressed state, her condition would have
deteriorated and had she not taken Mini-Me from the Animal Shelter, Mini-
Me would have been put down.

Now they have each other and have continued to thrive because of their
unconditional love.
